The Canyons are Utah’s largest ski & snowboard Resort, 3700 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. Canyons consist of 5 hotels and 3 mountain lodges. Nate started working at the Silverado Lodges. He was responsible for training 4 employees and some other technicians. He also talked about warranty work and his experiences with warranty issues. He shared with students that it’s important to take time to analyze problems and not to jump to conclusions too quickly. Nate said that if you take some time to think about problems (which he called opportunities) the spirit will have time to work and give you suggestions or ideas to solve those opportunities. He left the students with 5 important life lessons which are the following:
1. Always put Heavenly Father first.
2. 6 Month rule (give everything you can in first 6 months with a company and good things will happen)
3. Communication is essential to success
4. Continue your education
5. They shared with the students how to show the client or owner that facilities bring value to the business. They also shared the importance or need to be technical but also communicate in the business language to upper management understand. They stressed the point that facilities managers must be expert in public relations.

Another of the topics dealt with maintaining proper preventative maintenance on critical equipment. This was great to reinforce the importance to the students because this is something the students are learning in their classes and it was good that professionals also do these things.

They gave the students great advise for when we get out into the industry regarding energy. They said to look into energy consumption technologies to help reduce costs and to find problem areas with the building. Also, that motion sensors, vending machine sensors, and extinguishing common area lights are great ways to save energy. Students were encouraged to seek for government, or other rebates or grants as part of the energy management program.

January 28, 2010 Seminar

K.C. He is the current Utah IFMA chapter president and talked about how to help the students become more involved. As a result, a good discussion resulted which may allow for a combined meeting between the Utah chapter of IFMA and the BYU student chapter. After that discussion, Bryan, talked about the things he wish he would have focused on while he was in the program. A few of his points were technical writing, interior design, and building systems. It was a great overall seminar and the students are looking forward to the possibility of meeting with the Utah chapter of IFMA later this year.

January 14, 2010 Seminar

Dr. Campbell, along with Beverly Harmon, came to seminar to help the students understand the importance of internships. One major topic that Bruce brought up was that the building engineer should not be looked at as the person who will be able to fix a problem later. There is no good reason to build something poorly with the hopes that the engineer will “fix it” later. He addressed Life Safety in hospitals and emergency management. Life Safety is critical in a hospital and the code has saved many lives. He brought up the fact that there are COWs in hospitals. COWs stands for computer on wheels. These carts can be a hazard if left in the way of an automatic closing doorway. After the life safety discussion, he talked about emergency management. In that section, Mr. Adams emphasized planning. Plan for everything imaginable and then continue to plan for the unimaginable. Mr. Adams told the students that the Facility Manager is often the person who can make the call, after an emergency, to continue to defend in place or to abandon ship and shut down the hospital facility.

Thursday October 29, 2009 Seminar

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 43px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/Sun20mEP2eI/AAAAAAAAEcc/D9aBK-5bo8o/s320/iremnew.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398117011812243938" />

Randy Owen, COO of Coldwell Banker Commercial, came to seminar with a terrific presentation. He spoke to the students about documentation being a key factor in the way business is done. He also stressed the importance of know who the owner is and what their needs/wants are for the facilities. The students were very interested and asked several pertinent questions. One topic John made clear was to not only surround yourself with good employees, but to also treat them well! "You are only as good as the people you surround yourself with." said John. His presentation was very informative and valuable to the students.

World Work Place

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 60px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/St5Aj7lv9sI/AAAAAAAAEcU/ZUd0jUbhXZk/s320/WW09-web-banner.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394820389672056514" />
* Student Chapter of the Year
* Two BYU E-Poster Competition Finalists
* Five BYU Scholarship Recipients
* BYU Expo Booth
* Expo Experiences and Prizes
* Educational Sessions
* Key Note Speakers
* Good People, Good Food, & Good Times

September 24, 2009 Seminar

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 43px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/SsTLWSgOkVI/AAAAAAAAEcM/fcmxVFZhVfg/s320/iremnew.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387654638026527058" />

Randy Woodbury, the national IREM President spoke to the students today about property management. ASHE stands for American Society of Healthcare Engineers. Our program has and will continue to benefit greatly from Dale’s visit. His seminar was on joint commissioning and was a well prepared presentation. He wanted to, more than anything, answer the questions of the students and for that reason he opened up the last 1/3 of the seminar to questions. The students were able to ask thoughtful questions and Mr. Woodin was more than happy to answer them. Many of the students are interested in learning more about facility management in the healthcare environment and so this was a great opportunity to have him come and open that line of communication. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/SrvB8pyygeI/AAAAAAAAEcE/T3pawjODP7I/s320/ASHE-Logo.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385111027206750690" />

September 10, 2009 Seminar

<img style="wrap:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/SrvAsoAjfwI/AAAAAAAAEb8/NpwZPbV49m4/s320/Campus+Map.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385109652338081538" />
Ole Smith, BYU’s VP of Physical Facilities, spoke to the students about a Master plan, or long-term facility planning. Generally, it would be assumed that working for the LDS FM groups would bring with it strict rules and set schedules. Contrary to popular belief, students' experiences have been very much the opposite. Yes, there are guidelines and rules, but every day is a "roller-coaster" of fun at the FM office.

As assistants to an FM, students keep very busy in helping in any way they can. Whether they're paying utility bills or visiting sites checking HVAC systems, they're always on the run. Currently, Chase Parry and Paul Garretson are two of these interns. They are heavily involved with creating a large inventory list. This list will provide 24 different FMs from all over the Salt Lake Valley with critical information that could potentially save their FM groups and the LDS Church ten's of thousands of dollars. It's a daunting task, but one thing that can be counted on as an intern with the LDS Church is the amount of responsibility and trust that will be given. The utmost confidence is given by leaders with immediate trust of important tasks. BYU FPM students absolutely love this as an opportunity to learn and to grow by leaps and bounds. As stated by Chase Parry "Interning for the Church has been the best thing I could have ever imagined. I hope that all those who have given it thought can take advantage of any opportunities given and jump on board. It's an experience like no other. I mean, where else can you go to manage over 1 million square feet of property?"

Sodexo Internships

Sweet Home Alabama

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/Sk0UeJpAERI/AAAAAAAAEbU/t26jVVOs-oA/s320/Sodexo+Interns+temp.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353958040229908754" />
If you were asked today to move from your nice, comfy apartment, drive across the United States, and live in the deep south of Alabama, what would you say? When this question became a reality in late March to one of our students, he scratched his head like many of you might do. Then he decided to take the plunge and now Tyler Merrill is living life as an intern for Sodexo in Troy Alabama. Aside from the scathing hot humidity and the occasional down pour of rain, his internship has opened his eyes to the realities of facilities management in the real world.
A similar story has come true for several BYU students interning with Sodexo a Facility Management company this summer. John Mills, Eric Lima, PJ Taylor, Seth Bohne, and JD Shepherd are all fulfilling part of their FPM curriculum and gaining world class experience doing internships with Sodexo.
Tyler has been assigned many projects working as the intern to the operations and maintenance manager of Troy University. Such projects have included updating the tool inventory, reprogramming an automated fueling control system for campus vehicles, creating a recycling program, and installing electric metering systems for individual buildings to analyze lighting retrofit savings. He has also been heavily involved in the projects department managing the renovation of a residential home into a university rental. He has been responsible for coordinating work with various subcontractors, creating and managing a schedule, and most importantly managing a budget of $30,000. As an intern, that is a lot of responsibility.
The internships are busy and the learning is plentiful. Internships are a great opportunity for students to live life as a facility manager. They feel more prepared to jump into careers upon graduation having had these experiences. So the next time an offer comes to go somewhere far from what is known, take the challenge. You will be happy you did!

Smithsonian Internships

Getting Paid Working Hard and Having Fun

5 BYU FPM students are living a political life in Washington, DC for the summer while completing internships with Smithsonian Institution. Under the Office of Facility Management and Reliability group at Smithsonian, the 5 students are shadowing Zone Managers at 5 different areas in the Smithsonian Museum world. Part of an overall group of 9 interns, BYU makes up more than half of the group, but they don't hold that against their new friends.
Sam Scott: Working in the Gallery Place Zone, Sam is working hard on a project to create a maintenance plan for the newly aquired National Postal Museum. His area and projects also cover the American Art Museum as well as the Portrait Gallery. Sam has a goal to see every Smithsonian Museum by the end of the summer! (there are 22!)
Anthon Petty: The newly accepted FPM student is working hard at the National Air and Space Museum and the American Indian Museum, focusing on contracting... taking his new addiction to a new heights! Anthon's taken advantage of free Smithsonian training classes on Federal Contracting and will recieve his COTR certificate by the end of the summer.
Spencer Salmon: As the intern for the largest Smithsonian Musum, Spencer's North Mall Zone covers the Museum of Natural History with 1.25 Million SQFT! He's been working hard on a project with contracting relationships for future maintenance projects. Spencer is all business at the office and all business during his time off! Busy studying for the GMAT, Spencer still takes advantage of the free IMAX and ride simulators for Smithsonian Employees.
Tallon Sessions: Joined the crew this week at the start of summer term and is located in the South Mall Zone, with the Smithsonian Castle and the Quadragle (an underground art museum). Tallon's learning the ropes of working for the government and of the city and knows he has a lot more to learn.
Domineau Wiley: With what she claims as the best museum, Domineau is holding fort at the National Museum of American History--- the newly remodeled building. The problem statement focused on meeting economic constraints in the current economy for Higher Education Facility Management. Both teams presented great arguments and excellent research. One team presented 7 key strategies, and the other created a planning model. A representative from each team will go to present their work at the 2009 APPA conference in Vancouver Canada next month. The teams: Tim Abbot, Tallon Sessions & Deven Cammick and John Mills, Spencer Salmon, & Sam Kelly. Student research competitions are a very important part of the BYU FPM extracurricular curriculum.

Facility and Property Management Shirts for Sale

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 326px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vPpg9R5rsYc/SgySR8rQ4xI/AAAAAAAAEas/A3NW_zYQBEk/s400/0514091537.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335800495570215698" />
We have some very nice polos from past years that have not been purchased. We had several special guests in attendance and the evening was topped off by our keynote speaker Dr. Jeffery Campbell.

After the dinner and program there was dancing and socializing. The School of Technology sent 28 FPM students to Dallas, TX, to learn more about their future profession, meet working professionals and other students, learn from classes and visit the expo displaying various companies and products. IFMA created an educational-centered theme, yoUniversal, claiming each person could make the most of the conference for themselves. The group heard from Chip Heath, professor at Standford University and co-author of "Made To Stick." Two professors and 2 fellow students taught continuing education classes offered to conference attendees throughout the week. Social events and expo provided networking opportunities for students for future employers and internship opportunities. Companies such as Microsoft, Kimball Office Furniture and Flavia demonstrated how their specialized products are applicable in the facilities world. The BYU FPM group competed in several events against students from other schools, including international students. As with years in the past, BYU dominated the competition events and won the most individual scholarships than any other schools. Although the massive amounts of giveaways, pens and raffles entice students to come back each year, the benefits for the BYU FPM students overpowers those freebies. Educational and professional opportunities grow each year as the student-centered events at the conference evolve each year. The BYU FPM group hopes to continue participating in the great event in Orlando, FL next October.

Intermountain Medical Center Tour

For those of you that are not able to make it to World Work Place this year. Property Management Program earned top awards from an annual competition put on by Skanska, a leading construction company in the United States.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161887909387776434" style="FLOAT: left; Their team earned first place in this competition, which included a cash prize of $4,000. Their team addressed the issue of designing the ideal emergency department and healthcare facility that could respond to an infectious disease outbreak disaster. They came up with an innovative hospital design that would have the competence and aptitude to manage airborne pandemics. Their solution was an ingenious, mirror design template that can be applied to new hospital construction. Their hospital design utilizes a creative air supply system as well. This system uses 100% fresh air (instead of the average of 20%) and thus, effectively removes contamination from the air.

The other team consisted of Daniel Smith, Justin Bohon, Daniel Hunter, and Sam Kelly (shown in order from left to right). Their team took third place in the competition and earned a $1,000 cash prize. The issue that their team addressed was that of considering the design of the ideal patient-room and how to incorporate that design into new and existing hospitals. Their solution was an innovative and ideal patient room that, when implemented, will make hospitals much more hospitable. Their research and final presentation included a rendered floor plan of the patient room, the aesthetic capabilities, the technology features, the included services that this design has, the elements of green building that it incorporates, the environment considerations, safety, and different perspectives of this ideal design.

Both teams expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the chance to have had this experience to compete. Although no university class credit was received for competing, both teams eagerly expressed that they would participate in this competition again in a heartbeat. Both teams wish to articulate their appreciation to Skanska once more for this wonderful opportunity to learn and to have had such a great time in this event!

Students Tour Aspen Grove

On November 16, a group of BYU students had the opportunity to travel up the canyon to Aspen Grove. He also explained why the need for construction was so big. They have a couple buildings that are the original structures from when the camp was started. All of those need to be rebuilt completely. It's pretty impressive and the floor plan is available online.
